First Fieldwork Write-Up
Follow the instructions in the Fieldwork Guidelines (PDF, 2 pages) passed out last Monday to conduct fieldwork that answers the following question:
At the fieldwork site you chose, how does playful technology affect or shape human play?
To answer this you will need to state the technology you chose, which fieldwork site you chose, and what happened there. It is usually helpful to detail a small number of examples of what happened during play with your supporting materials (see below) and then refer to them in your answer (e.g., "see figure 1" or "see quote #4").
To receive credit for the assignment, you must turn in:
- One blog entry containing your answer to the question above (minimum 250 words). You must cite (1) material from your supporting materials (see below) and you must (2) use at least one course concept, term or quote from any class reading.
- One blog entry containing your supporting materials that were collected in your fieldwork and that you refer to in your answer. These may be quotations, photographs (see the previous handout Posting an Image in a Blog Entry), transcripts, field notes, links to Web sites of the place you visited or the playful technology you investigated, outlines of field notes, photographs, videotape. These supporting materials do not count toward the word limit. The kind of supporting materials you post may vary a lot depending on your fieldwork site, but it should be clear to the reader that you actually conducted fieldwork. Do not use real names or disclose private locations in your supporting materials. When writing up your supporting materials you can simply transcribe long quotes, or you can write something more detailed. An example of part of a detailed write-up for your "supporting materials" is the section marked "Part II" in the children handout from last month.
- Bring the signed consent and assent forms (Adult Consent Form, Minor Assent Form) to class
Very important reminders (also discussed in the fieldwork guidelines):
- Do not use real names in your supporting materials
- Do not disclose the location of private places
- You must include a link to this page on all blog posts related to fieldwork, using the title "More Information About This Project".
To receive credit, your 2 blog posts must be on time, you must have an answer of at least 250 words, and a supporting materials post (no word limit). You must address each part of the question. Please write, spell-check, and save your blog posts in a word processor first, then post them to your blog. When you make a direct quotation or paraphrase, include a citation to the page and author where you found the material. DUE: 11:30 a.m. on Monday, October 10 (one hour before class begins).
