BLOG POST: Diffusion and Configured Users
For this assignment, imagine you are the instructor of a course called "Communication Technology & Society." Your job is to use advertising for a communication technology to explain how technology develops. To make things crystal clear to your students, you plan to write a web tutorial for your class that uses two specific examples of TV ads for communication technology.
Before you begin this assignment you'll need to:
-
complete the HTML workshop in your discussion section on Apr 16-18 (or have existing knowledge of HTML).
- attend the advertising and diffusion lecture on Apr 20
(or possibly have notes and a discussion with someone who attended)
Part I. Choose lesson topic. First, choose a topic that you will explain from the TOPICS list below. State what you chose.
Part II. Embed two examples. Next, find 2 (or more) video advertisements for a communication technology that can be used to explain your topic. Use the list of possible sources at the bottom of this assignment to find examples. Use your HTML skills from discussion section to embed clips of the ads in your blog posts.
Part III. Write up your tutorial. Finally, below your examples, write up a tutorial that will help students in your class understand the topic you chose using your examples. You must refer to both examples and the topics that you chose.
Important tips: The best responses to this assignment two choose example ads that are different in some way. For instance, "the first ad shows that technology 1 is an example of X, but the second ad shows that technology 2 is an example of Y." Or: "This ad from the 1970s shows X but this later ad from the 1980s is quite different."
List of Concepts to Teach: (choose one)
- the certainty trough (from lecture 4/20)
- the configured user (from lecture 4/20)
- 2 different groups from the diffusion of innovations (from lecture 4/20)
The instructor's lecture notes that cover these topics have been placed online to make this assignment easier. (This is the only time the instructor's lecture notes will be posted online.) Download them from the course schedule or here: Diffusion-Certainty Lecture Notes.pdf
