BLOG POST: The State of Generativity

Generativity refers to "a system's capacity to produce unanticipated change through unfiltered contributions from broad and varied audiences." (Zittrain, p. 70).

Part I. Choose one communication technology that we have discussed at some point in this class so far (or a specific instance or brand of it). State which technology you chose. Cite the reading or lecture where this technology was discussed or introduced.

Part II. Assess each of the features of generativity for the technology (as discussed in pp. 71-73). That is, assess the technology in terms of its:

  • Leverage

  • Adaptability

  • Ease of Mastery

  • Accessibility

  • Transferability

Part III. State a way that communication technologies are generally becoming either more or less generative. How? Why? (Some aspects of some technologies are becoming more, some are becoming less, so you should be able to justify either answer) Justify your answer using the concepts or quotes from the reading. Be sure you give one or more example technologies that demonstrate your ideas so that it is clear you understood the reading.

Post an answer of at least 300 words to your blog.

DEADLINE: your blog post should be online at 11 a.m. -- one hour before class begins.

Due on April 15, 2009.
