Halo 3 revisted...

Halo 3

Formal Constraints:

1.    Halo 3 is a 1st person shooter in which you progress level to level in a fairly restricted environment until your task is complete.
2.    You are the last of your kind, which happens to be a super soldier, so you must be the best at killing the enemy.
3.    You basically kill the enemy with either some type of gun or a type of grenade.
4.    The player’s enemy is the Covenant and they are always trying to kill you.

Big Red One

They playful technology I would like to discuss today is the game Call of Duty 2: Big Red One. The narrative follows the now famous American infantry unit, the Big Red One, throughout their various missions during World War II.

The (Im)Balance of Mario Party

For this blog assignment, I chose to focus on Mario Party and the constraints that make up the game.  Formal constraints is the narrative behind the game.  In this game the character you choose to play against other characters is a board-game style video game.  There is one ultimate goal to the game.

  • To be the first to the finish.

Because of these goals, there is a conflict of interest when it comes to the material constraints of the game.

Toejam and Earl!

I have decided to use the game Toejam and Earl for Sega Genesis.  This is a game that I have not played, nor heard about, since I was probably seven.  Regardless, it was a great game about two aliens with funky tunes.  When I think about it now, I am pretty sure the creators were on acid or something of the sort.

Bub and Bob's Journey through the Cave of Monsters

Bubble Bobble was first released as an arcade game in 1986, but it soon found its way over to home computers and game consoles, NES. In this game the first player controls a green bubble dragon and the second player controls the blue bubble dragon. Together they make their journey through the Cave of Monsters in order to rescue their girlfriends. The game involves completing a stage of ninety-nine levels in which they move over a system of platforms, bust and push bubbles, and avoid enemies.
Formal Constraints
1. Everything that moves can kill you.

I'll Take Gameplay, Any Day

For this blog post, I’ve decided to go with a game that I truly love. I have spent many hours of time dismantling the game known as The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, and it is definitely one of my favorite games

Video Game Narratives are Dead

I can’t think of a better technology that illustrates Mateas and Stern’s playful technologies striking a balance between action and plot better than Fable II, which was released a little more than a week ago on XBOX 360. The game is about choice (The choice to be good or bad, attractive or ugly, pure or impure). The developer’s intention was to create a game that created an emotional and captivating experience based on the way you play it. However, once the user gets past the initial shellshock of such a grand palette of choices, there isn’t much motivation to make these choices.
