My apple iPod is a communication technology that demonstrates the five features of a generative system through...
Leverage: allows music to be transportable; I can listen to all my favorite artists anytime/anywhere
Adaptability: it appeals to a broad range of users because young and old people can personalize it with their specific favorite artists; unless you hate music you will be benefitted by the iPod
Ease of Mastery: it doesn’t take long to learn because there are only a few button options to learn and is similar to other technologies like a MP3 player or iphone
Accessibility: it is very easy to purchase; many stores carry them in different colors/sizes/shapes; also since they are in high demand the price has dropped drastically making it more affordable which broadens the amount/kind of people who can obtain it easily
Transferability: changes in apple’s iPod technology are easily conveyed to their audiences and consumers through commercials and advertisements; most of the people they are appealing to are exposed to ads on TV, in magazines, or online because the consumer typically is involved in the media for example so it works out well for the company
The apple iPod is more generative than other tools because it demonstrates the five features of the generative system unlike some technologies.

This advertisement for apple’s iPod tells me to be my own unique individual through all the different bright colored backgrounds and different body outlines of people. It tells me to be active and make my own style because that is what is cool. The people in the ad are dancing to their own beats and enjoyed the music. They seem to be in their own world, living in the moment. The iPod allows them to do this. I feel like the advertisement is telling me the iPod will allow me to enjoy life to its fullest and personalize my style to my favorite things. I can relate to this ad because the body outlines look young based on the baggy clothes they wear and the way they style their hair. Also, they seem like they have young personalities because they are moving so much. This iPod seems to be portrayed to a young generation which I am part of. The ad makes me feel like the iPod was made for my enjoyment.
The great thing about the iPod is that it allows music to be mobile and transportable. I can take my favorite artists with me anywhere. The long boring walk to class by myself can now be enjoyable because of my iPod. The identity prescribed to the iPod transfers over to reflect my perceived identity. I feel like I am young and hip. I can choose which size, style, and color of iPod that I want to own which is a way for me to personalize my purchase. Also the music I choose will make my iPod different than all of my friends. I can even engrave my name on it. Owning an apple iPod makes me feel connected with my generation. We all enjoy the same communication technology and can share our enjoyment with each other through using it. If I did not own one I would not feel cool and with the crowd. I would probably be using an old cd portable player that would cause my peers to make fun of me, and I would stand out in a negative way. The communication technology of an iPod helps create a new identity for me by giving me the stereotype that goes along with owning one. It demonstrates that I am willing to adapt to the changing generations by using the iPod instead of the portable CD player. It gives me the hip, cool stereotype of having the latest technology, and it gives me an identity that many of my peers can relate to because they all own one as well. I feel my identity is better liked by my peers because I own an iPod.

I really like your post about
By hgettle12I really like your post about the iPod. As with many of our peers, I also own an iPod, and believe it is the latest and greatest thing that has shaped our generation (as well as for the music industry). It is much easier to carry around a smaller, portable music device than those tacky portable CD players from the '90s, and it makes it much more adaptable to our environment.
I think you should add a quote or two to how your post relates to the Gauntlett reading of the technologies of the self. You have the idea there, but I think if you add some evidence to back up the idea, your blog post would be more effective.
Great job!
By greenyYou demonstrated the five features very well with your iPod example. I also really liked your ad. Your interpretation of it was very interesting, and I feel like you picked an ad that demonstrated identity prescription well. I think you definitely picked up on the identity that comes along with owning an iPod, and I agree with everything you said because I also own an iPod.
sweet blog.
By greensp4My favorite part of your blog was the last line, when you said: "I feel my identity is better liked by my peers because I own an iPod."
That sentence really made me laugh. You adapted the Ipod very well with Zittrain's fivefeatures of generativity. Each example was dead-on and really made it easy to understand. Specifically, I really liked your example for accessibility. That is one of Apple's greatest marketing tools, to be able to customize every Ipod. You hit it right on the head, good job. Your blog was also good because you brought up a technology that isn't as generative, CD player. By comparing the two, you were able to portray how much greater the Ipod is and how much more generative it is for our society. Ipod commercials always focus on the music aspect of it, but an Ipod is much more than music. It has an entire culture behind it and what it means and I think you did a good job in explaining that.
